LoopLoop >> Recorded Memories
Exhibition Dates: Thu, September 9 – Sat, October 16, 2010
Opening Thursday Sept. 9, 8-11pm
Using animation, sounds, warping and time shifts this 5 min video loop runs forwards
and backwards looking for forgotten details, mimicking the way memories are replayed in the mind. LoopLoop is made from an image sequence Patrick Bergeron captured in a train traveling to Hanoi in Vietnam. Bergeron filmed the houses along the railroad. The 1000 images of this sequence have been stitched into one long panoramic image. Moving elements have been seamlessly integrated into the panoramic still activating it in subtle and surprising ways.

While traveling in South-East Asia, Bergeron captured the day-to-day events,
places, and people he encountered:

“When I came back home, many experiences and details had already been forgotten.
My brain failed at accommodating the abundance of the subjects met. When I look at the video tapes of my travels, I remember those past events. My memory is activated by these images. By watching them several times, I detect new interesting facts; a dog hidden in a corner, a sign on a wall, a strange person. For now on each one of these new details, unperceived before, takes part and contributes to my memories and souvenirs.”

Video artist and researcher, Patrick Bergeron, modifies and manipulates the image and its details. He is interested in the concepts of speed, memories and the image components. His work is a mix of animation, experimental film and documentary. For the last 15 years, he has been working in special effects for the film industry and has worked on films such as The Lord of the Rings and The Matrix.
